Health and wellness is a daunting subject, wouldn’t you say? So, I figured I would start this blog by just discussing one thing at a time. Hoping by the end of this we could each build a lifestyle and make choices that are better for us and our families in all stages of life.
I have to note that I am not a doctor, nutritionist, or expert in any sense. I am you, trying to do my best to learn and grow as I age. I seek answers by listening to a variety of experts, not all agreeing on all the things and watching on as even science changes its mind every so often. One day we should eat more potatoes, the next, potatoes are evil, to: potatoes aren’t evil, just misunderstood and now identifies as a fruit! (Not really, but you get the picture) No offence, but how the heck are we, mere mortals, to make any sense of all these professionals telling us all these different stories? Especially when we are not biologists, or doctors or scientists? Well, as I said I am no expert and the things I will share here are my own opinions. What I believe is that we should all try to do the common sense stuff and then find what works for you after that.
I am an “n of one” so to speak. In all industries a sample size is referred to as the number “n”. So in saying “n of one” I am my own sample size. If I then include my household in this real life study, we are an n of 4. But for this blog I will only share what I have discovered by using myself as my sample. I encourage you to share what worked for you and we can all learn so much from each individual study as we are all at different stages of life, health and everything else.
This is the current situation of my study subject (me). I am 47 years old woman, going through life’s changes. I am also an insulin dependant diabetic for the past 10+ years. I am currently overweight with a BMI hovering around 27,where 18 to 25 is normal. I have chronic fatigue syndrome, which means low energy levels all the time. I have anxiety and depression and recently diagnosed with ADHD. I know, hyperactive, right? Well, apparently the psychologist informed me that they use ADHD exclusively now and no longer use ADD as the hyperactivity could be physical or mental. Ah, now that I can relate to. My mind never stops thinking. I am married with 17 year old twins, each one of my family members having their own stories and challenges, but that’s for another day. I have a successful career in corporate which brings with it high amounts of stress, responsibility and often long hours. This leaves me with very little time to take care of myself (or so I have told myself). With all of this I am also trying to find financial freedom (get out of debt) and declutter my house, organise it as well as make it look pretty. This does all play into wellness, believe it or not.
So why am I writing this blog? I want to share what I learn on every aspect of my journey to Revamp My Life. I would love it if we could start a community and share our experiences as none of what I told you about me is unique, yet I am unique and so are you with our unique circumstances and challenges. So why are we looking for “one size fits all” solutions. Let us discover together what works for each of us and share it lest there be one less person that has to find the answers the hard way.
You won’t find all the answers here to answer all of life’s questions. But you will find one person’s perspective on the questions I have asked and hopefully some additional view points from each of you on other options to try if they worked for you.
Thank you for reading and commenting on these blogs with kindness and compassion and a willingness to share your “n of one” study learnings. Who knows, maybe we all level up by the end of this journey.
